Shibboleth issue 9
Art is resistance
As the influence of the rich and hateful grows, and as their abuses become more brazen and widespread, all people of conscience – and particularly people of faith – have a responsibility to resist.
Issue 9 of Shibboleth magazine explores resistance in and through art: from performance art in protests to photography, literature, music and the act of creation itself, all as acts of resistance.
Issue 9 also includes interviews with Scottish Folk band Siskin Green and Minnesota State Representative Leigh Finke, talking about feminism and trans rights respectively, as well as: a testimony of queer faith, a profile of an inclusive church, and the radical and often violent tactics of a justice movement most people revere; and why Christian leftism makes sense historically.
There’s also under-appreciated classic CCM, columns on art, mental health, sex and smashing the patriarchy, and resisting power through memes.
Issue 9 highlights
- Cover story: Doug Francisco, founder of the Red Rebel Brigade, who brought performance art to Extinction Rebellion protests, writing about the thinking behind the Red Rebels and the effect they have had.
- Interview: Siskin Green, beloved Christian feminist folk band from Scotland, lent us two of their members, Margaret McLarty and Suzanne Butler, to talk about resistance, folk music and kindness.
- Joint interview: Haejin and Makoto Fujimura, a lawyer activist and fine artist who find more crossover than you might imagine in their respective works of justice and abstract expressionism.
- Liberators profile: Erica Lees-Smith writes about the Suffragettes, whose righteous cause involved some methods modern judges and commentators seem keen to overlook.
- Essay: Matt Bernico of the Magnificast podcast offers a vision of Everything for Everyone, where Christian tradition may have the answers to the horrors of climate change caused by capitalism.
- God's work: Minnesota Rep Leigh Finke is the first openly trans woman elected to the state legislature, and spoke to Shibboleth about being trans, working for justice and still finding a place in church.
