Shibboleth issue 10
Obedient dissent (in the service of our neighbours)
Sue Parfitt is one of our heroes – a model of activism as incarnational witness – and she speaks to us in Issue 10 about civil disobedience as faithful obedience to God. “Britain’s most arrested priest” shares something of her background in the movement against nuclear weapons and her willingness to be arrested when the law – or the target of an action – is unjust.
Sue Parfitt’s witness is rooted in love of neighbour, and Issue 10 features other pieces about loving our neighbours better. Omar Barghouti, co-founder of the BDS movement for Palestine shares his thoughts on how we can love our neighbour in the form of the Palestinian people, through Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions. Krish Kandiah talks to us about refugees and immigrants and the decent Christian, neighbourly response (spoilers: it’s not Danny Tommo or Tommy Robinson’s approach)(Are they different people? We are not convinced!). We also take a look at transphobia – a threat to some of our most vilified neighbours – in the form of a piece asking a handful of people: WHAT IS THE TRANS AGENDA?
Issue 10 also features profiles of “the saint of 9/11” and Chris Hani, one of the leaders of the armed struggle against Apartheid. In addition there’s prayer, poetry, anti-militarist art from Spelling Mistakes Cost Lives, a piece about Ms. Rachel and Hasan Piker, decoded dog-whistles, a stupid horoscope, earthy art, Athlete, the ethics of electric cars, mental health and feminist reading recommendations, plus so much more!
It’s probably not the best magazine in the world. Statistical likelihood, plus the size of our budget and staff make that almost certain. But it’s pretty fucking great. You should subscribe to help it keep going.
